Jesus is Crucified
Holy Week: Friday
Seen on Twitter this morning…”Stop with the Bible quotes, we know that it is Good Friday.”
Has anything changed since THE Good Friday?
At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock….Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain in the Temple was torn in tow, from top to bottom. When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed, “Truly, this was the Son of God!” Mark 15: 33,37,39
Jesus’ death for us on the cross seals a new contract between God and us. The old contract involved forgiveness of sins through animal sacrifices (Exodus 24:6-8). Jesus offered himself. Spotless. Now all can come.
There is a rumor that ISIS wants to sacrifice a priest or Christian on a cross this Good Friday. The line of martyrs is long. The line of the oppressed endless. Persons of faith do not ask “WHY” they ask “WHO?”
Jesus asked Peter—“Who do you say that I am?”
This questions is what is looming at the cross….Who is this man? What did he do at the cross for us…why should we care about it on this Friday?
C.S.Lewis summed it up like this:
On the one hand Death is the triumph of Satan, the punishment of the Fall, and the last enemy. Christ shed tears at the grave of Lazarus and sweated blood in Gethsemane: the Life of Lives that was in Him detested this penal obscenity not less than we do, but more.
On the other hand, only he who loses his life will save it. We are baptized into the death of Christ, and it is the remedy for the Fall. Death is, in fact, what some modern people call “ambivalent.” It is Satan’s great weapon and also God’s great weapon: it is holy and unholy; our supreme disgrace and our only hope; the thing Christ came to conquer and the means by which He conquered.”
– C.S. Lewis, Miracles
The Roman officer recognized WHO Jesus was…do we today—on this Friday recognize
and affirm in any way the contract (covenant) God has made with us in Jesus Christ?
Jesus is the Lamb of God.
Jesus is the Son of God.
Jesus, Served others, gave His life as a Ransom.
Stop with the Bible quotes. Jesus is crucified.
God has saved us!
